Today’s show is about 10 things I am grateful for about New Orleans. This has been on my mind as I work on the Beyond Bourbon Street Travel Guide, and as I think about the end of 2019.

Beyond Bourbon Street Sponsors

Two Chicks Walking Tours If you love New Orleans, you’ve probably wandered through the Garden District. It is beautiful, but it really comes to life when you have a guide who can tell you about the history and about the people who live there.

On a Two Chicks Walking tour you learn about the architecture, the residents and more. You also get to tour Lafayette Cemetery, just across the street from Commander’s Palace.

Two Chicks keeps their tour groups small and offers a more intimate experience than most. You’ll have time to ask your questions and really walk away getting an insider’s perspective of the Garden District.

Two Chicks also offers tours of St. Louis Cemetery #1 and the Ladies of the Night tour. Whatever you choose, know you will be in great hands and will have a wonderful time. Use code BEYOND and save 15%. twochickswalkingtours.com

Today's episode is a Q&A show with a bit of a twist.

I am joined by Shelby Westfeldt. Shelby's family has been in the coffee trading business since 1851. They also have a long family history when it comes to Carnival and the Rex Organization.

Join Shelby and I as we discuss the family business and her experience as the Queen of Carnival in 2003. We then shift gears and answer listener questions about everything from coffee to the cleanest bathrooms on Bourbon Street.

All this and more in today's episode.

Paul Sanchez, New Orleans Best Songwriter

Paul Sanchez is the best songwriter in New Orleans. He's been writing songs and telling stories since he was six years old. Join us as we talk about New Orleans, music and storytelling.

Learn about the earliest days of Paul's former band Cowboy Mouth, his connection to Steven Soderbergh, and who has the best singing voice in New Orleans.

This interview first aired in October 2016. My interview skills have improved since then, but listening to this one today made me smile. I hope it brings joy to you as well.

Give it a listen then check out Paul's music online. His first solo release was Jet, Black and Jealous (1992). It's still one of my favorite albums by any singer songwriter.

Louisiana and the Francophonie

Today's episode is about the story behind Louisiana becoming a member of the Francophonie, also known as l'Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.

The Francophonie is comprised of 84 countries, provinces, and one state (Louisiana) whose membership works together to celebrate and preserve French language and culture.

To help us learn about the Francophonie and Louisiana's role in it, I'm joined by Scott Tilton and Rudy Bazenet.

Scott is a New Orleans native who developed a passion for the French language as a child and led the charge to lobby Louisiana's leadership to apply for admission to the Francophonie.

Rudy Bazenet works in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and partnered with Scott on this project.

We discuss the road to membership, Louisiana's rich French history, and more.

Today's episode is all about coffee in New Orleans.

It is the 3rd in a sub-series about staple crops or industries in Louisiana. We’ve previously talked about Tabasco (episode 87) and Camellia Brand red beans (episode 95). While coffee isn’t grown in New Orleans, the city has a long history with it.

Today, I visit with local coffee roaster Kevin Pedeaux (Coast Roast Coffee). We talk about the Crescent City's long history with coffee, how coffee serves as part of the fabric of the city today, and how king cake played a role in his decision to start Coast Roast Coffee.

All this and more in today's episode!

Quick Episode Summary

  • Recap of last episode with listener Q&A
  • Introduction of Kevin Pedeaux, Coffee Roast Coffee
  • History of coffee in New Orleans
  • The role of coffee traders
  • The port of New Orleans and the 'hidden' coffee infrastructure
  • Coffee with Kevin You Tube show

You probably have a bottle of TABASCO® Sauce on your counter or in your pantry right now, but do you know the story behind the brand? Did you know the McIlhenny Company is 151 years old, or that every bottle of TABASCO® is made on a small island in Louisiana?

Today, we go way beyond Bourbon Street to bring you the story of TABASCO® Sauce. To do that, we traveled out to Avery Island, located in the heart of Acadiana, about 130 miles west of New Orleans.

Join me as I talk with TABASCO® historian and archivist, Mr. Shane Bernard. Shane shares the story of the beginnings of this 151 year old company, as well as the story of Avery Island.

Next up, I spoke with Mr. John Simmons. John is a descendent of Edmund McIlhenny, the creator of TABASCO® Sauce, and one of four family members who works in the business today. John shares his perspective on the family business, and tells us about the more recent history of the TABASCO® brand.

By the end of this episode, you’ll be planning your own visit to Avery Island to explore the jungle gardens and tour the TABASCO® factory for yourself!

Bellegarde Bakery

Today's episode is all about bread. More specifically, it is about one man’s passion for bread and changing the way we think about it.

My guest today is Graison Gill, an artisan in the truest sense. He’s a baker of bread in a city known for po-boys, but that’s not his story.

Graison is the founder of Bellegarde Bakery here in New Orleans, and if you love bread you won’t want to miss it. It will change the way you think about that bag of flour sitting in your pantry!

Laine Kaplan Levenson has spent the last 10+ years telling stories about New Orleans and Louisiana. For the last three years, she's produced and hosted Tripod, New Orleans at 300.

Tripod won critical acclaim for its exploration of topics related to the Tricentennial, including a mini series on our relationship with Haiti.

Ever heard the word 'Bulbancha?' If not, you'll definitely want to tune in!

In late 2019, Laine released Sticky Wicket, a 4-episode podcast about the often-contentious relationship between the media and Louisiana politicians.

Sticky Wicket covered Huey Long, Dutch Morial, Jim Garrsion, and Kathleen Blanco. The last one will leave you thinking about Hurricane Katrina and the government's response in a different light.

Join us for this discussion as we cover Tripod, Sticky Wicket and more. I had a fun time interviewing a fellow podcaster, and know you'll enjoy the conversation, too!

Check Out Tripod, Sticky Wicket and More

Click this link and download a pdf with the highlights of today's show.

Want to listen to Laine's podcasts? Here are the links you need. You can also find them on Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts.

If you only listen to one episode, make it the interview with Kathleen Blanco (but you should really listen to all four!).

Thanks to Laine Kaplan Levenson for joining me today. It was a real treat to visit with a fellow podcaster who is focused on the history of New Orleans.

A special thanks to Chef Eric Cook and the team at Gris Gris for allowing me the use of their private dining room to record the interview. Gris Gris is a wonderful place for lunch, dinner, drinks, or a private function.

Insider tip: Have lunch upstairs on the balcony when the weather is nice. I love the gumbo paired with a Caesar salad - or shrimp and grits when you want to go all in!

52+ Free (or Nearly Free) Things to Do in New Orleans

One of the wonderful things about New Orleans is that so many of the best things are free. Don't believe me? How about Mardi Gras and French Quarter Fest as a start? Add in festivals, exploring our neighborhoods, and enjoying the Mississippi River and you've got a great start.

Listen to today's episode and walk away with dozens of things to eat, see, do, and explore. I do have one confession... well, two actually.

First, we cover far more than 52 things. It is probably more like 152 if you added up every festival and every variation, but who has time for that?

Second, not everything we discuss is free. I set a threshold of $6.
Why $6, you ask? Listen to the episode and find out!
