Today’s episode is about Mardi Gras 2021.
More specifically, about the COVID-induced changes and what they mean for Carnival season.
I'm joined by Mardi Gras expert Arthur Hardy to discuss what we're likely to see and how it will be different.
Today’s episode is devoted to books about New Orleans. If you’re caught up on Netflix and want to spend some time reading instead, this one’s for you.
I recorded this in December 2020. Even if you are listening years from now, this will help you get to know the city better whether you are planning a trip or just wanting to stay connected with New Orleans.
We’ve done 125 episodes. Talked to many authors. This is the 2nd time I'm doing a show like this one. The first was back in episode 111.
Here’s what this is not. It is not a top 10 list. It’s not a comprehensive list. It’s just a list of very good books about New Orleans, across several categories.
Ready? On to the books!
Today's episode is about the Honey Island Swamp, located 45 minutes from the French Quarter.
I'm joined by Jessica Gauley, CEO of Honey Island Kayak Tours. We kayaked with Matt May, Sarah Megan Jenkins, and Chanelle 'Nell' Bentz.
Today's episode is about the Mississippi River batture. Don't know what that is or where it is? Stay tuned and find out!
I am joined by Professor Oliver Houck - an author, professor, and lawyer who has spent much of his life on environmental issues in Louisiana. He also wrote a book specifically about the batture called Down on the Batture.
In today's episode I answer 18 questions (mostly) about New Orleans. These questions were submitted by listeners like you.
We cover everything from how hurricanes impact home prices to the Mother-in-Law lounge, and more.
04:32 - With Louisiana having had a record 5 hurricanes hit this year it it still a safe place to move to and live? Or, due to this fatigue are long term residents finally moving elsewhere?
06:30 - How are the real estate prices affected by the hurricanes? There is a national trend, due to Covid, to move out of the city and to the burbs? Is this happening in NOLA? Are the real estate prices going down at all?
09:30 - Has been any talk of Mardi Gras being cancelled next year. Also, has it been cancelled in the past?
10:45 - What got you started in podcasting? Do you have any favorite podcasts?
14:30 - What’s your best pothole story? Either a “I didn’t see it and hit it so hard and my soul left my body” story, or an eternal pothole that has always been there and keeps being a source if “entertainment."
15:45 - Have you ever been to the Mother In Law Lounge?
17:00 - How are the buskers doing during covid? I know lots of musicians like Glen David Andrews, Kermit, and jon Cleary are doing online stuff relying on tips and doing local porch gigs..but how are the other guys?
18:15 - What would be your last drink instead of last meal? The where and why?
19:05 - For people considering buying a home in New Orleans, how much does flood zone factor into the considerations? Areas that flooded after Katrina like Lakeview and mid-city have repopulated. Assuming levees hold, and the home is somewhat elevated, do people just pay for flood insurance and hope for the best?
22:30 - What’s your favorite “touristy” thing to do in the city? I love the bike tours!
23:36 - Has Richard Campanella written about Acadiana?
25:00 - What are the best restaurants to eat at on Thanksgiving?
26:20 - What is your favorite episode?
27:45 - What has been a fan favorite that you might not have expected?
28:35 - What is an aspect of your city that the podcast made you see differently?
30:00 - Is there a piece of equipment that has made your podcasts better? What is it, & how does it help you?
31:40 - What has it been like maintaining the BBS Krewe page? What positive things have come of it?
Today's episode is the story of a former NFL player from New Orleans, his struggle with addiction, and the unlikely friendship that helped him survive.
Jackie Wallace was a star at St. Augustine high school and at the University of Arizona. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings and in his seven year career was involved in three Super Bowls.
Ted Jackson spent 34 years as a photojournalist with the New Orleans Times Picayune. This story is what happened when he wandered out of the newsroom on a hot, humid July afternoon in search of a good shot and a story.
Today's episode is a solo show. It's the 2nd of two parts where I''ll use the ABCs as a roadmap for enjoying New Orleans.
I'm recording this in October 2020, still in the midst of COVID.
Lots of you ask in the Facebook group about things to do in New Orleans right now, and how to experience the city from afar. The obvious answer to the latter is this podcast as well as our Facebook group and Instagram page.
Beyond that, I came up with this idea of challenging myself to think about New Orleans through the lens of the alphabet.
I thought this would be a fun challenge for me and a different way of generating ideas about things to do and New Orleans history for you.

Today's episode is all about craft beer in New Orleans. It's been several years since we specifically focused on the craft beer scene, and much has changed. We'll discuss the current breweries and trends, and talk about how to enjoy them even during a global pandemic.
The last episode was a Q&A show where we answered questions from listeners like you. If you missed it go back and give it a listen. Those are always fun episodes that cover a lot of ground and that one was no different. The one previous to that was a terrific discussion about Louisiana through the lens of our 64 Parishes. I was joined by Erin Greenwald, Editor-in-Chief of 64 Parishes. Definitely worth a listen if you want a history lesson about Louisiana through our geography.
The most frequent questions I get are about moving to New Orleans. If you are ready to make the move, you need a good realtor. That's where Liz Wood comes in.

Liz makes the process fun and easy. Reach out to Liz at lizwoodrealty.com and make your dream of living in New Orleans a reality. Several members of our community have done just that and are thrilled with their new homes You will be, too!

I'll also put a link in the shownotes to an article Liz wrote about Moving to New Orleans and why sometimes renting is the best first choice. LizWoodRealty.com

Today’s episode is the 3rd of three in a row about New Orleans music.
The Historic New Orleans Collection (THNOC) recently did an online tournament where they matched New Orleans music against each other in an NCAA March Madness style bracket they called Music Madness.
People were invited to vote and they published the results online, while also linking to the launch of an online exhibit, called New Orleans Medley: Sounds of the City.
Eli Haddow and Teresa Develin over at THNOC suggested it might be fun if I filled out my own bracket and talked about my selections. I've taken the challenge and covered my initial picks in the last two episodes (#113 and #114).
Today, I am joined by the bracket's creator, Mr. Eric Seiferth. Eric and I talk through my picks, his methodology, and more. We dive deep into the music and the people who made it.

Today’s episode is about Sicilian Italians and their contributions to food culture in New Orleans. I’m joined by author and professor Justin Nystrom who wrote a book called Creole Italian; Sicilian Immigrants and the Shaping of New Orleans Food Culture.
Nystrom’s book was nominated for a James Beard Award in 2019 and helps shine a light on New Orleans food history through the lens of Sicilians. We cover the earliest imports of Sicilian lemons to New Orleans, discuss the French Quarter of the mid 1800s forward, and more. You're sure to see New Orleans food in a different light after this one.

For some reason, this topic makes me nervous. Mostly because I am not good about retention and I know a lot of authors!

From spirits to hand sanitizer. The world has changed since our last episode just two weeks ago. Today, we’re going to talk about how a couple of local New Orleans businesses are working to help the city respond to the COVID19 pandemic.
Join me as I talk with Sal Bivalacqua of Seven Three Distilling and Jess Bourgeois of Lula Restaurant Distillery. These two business owners essentially used their expertise to create a new business in four days, shifting from the manufacture of spirits for drinking to the production of hand sanitizer.
We talk alcohol, hand sanitizer, Bourbon and more in this episode of the Beyond Bourbon Street podcast.
Check out Seven Three Distilling Company, then be sure to visit when you can. Their website talks about their company name, product offerings, and tour. We'll be doing a Beyond Bourbon Street event there once life returns to normal.
Lula Restaurant-Distillery is a unique place to enjoy excellent cuisine with views of a working distillery. We will work with Jess at Lula to host a Beyond Bourbon Street event in the future.
Both Lula and Seven Three are currently open for to go purchases. If you are in New Orleans, consider placing an order and supporting them.
Here are several articles discussing New Orleans neighborhoods. This is probably worth doing an entire episode about in the future!

In addition to being long time sponsors of the Beyond Bourbon Street podcast the crew at Two Chicks Walking Tours has earned attention in numerous international publications including Glamour, Marie Claire, Harper's Bazaar, The Sunday Times travel Magazine, and US News and World Report among others
Two Chicks small group tours include the ever popular Garden District Tour, signature tours such as DEAD Sexy, and Brothels, Bordellos and Ladies of the Night. And their classic the French Quarter and St. Louis Cemetery tours. They also offer private tours that can be customized just for your group.

I love the tours offered by Two Chicks Walking Tours, but as much as the tours themselves I appreciate the way my friend Christine Miller has built her business. Christine loves and cares about her customers, the people she works with, and the city of New Orleans.
Two Chicks employs guides that are published authors, local artists and really engaged New Orleanians.
Whatever you choose, know you will be in great hands and will have a wonderful time. The team at Two Chicks is continually learning more about New Orleans which means the tours are constantly evolving. Use code BEYOND and save 15%. twochickswalkingtours.com

Today’s episode is about 12 reflections on Mardi Gras 2020. I’ll share why it was unique, what changes we may see in the future, and more.
My hope is whenever you listen to this, even if it is years from now, it will provide insight into this time of year.

Today’s show was recorded live at the King Cake Hub in New Orleans.
My guest is Peggy Scott Laborde, the Senior Producer at WYES and host of Steppin' Out, the only weekly television show about New Orleans culture and arts. We talk about Mardi Grsas past and present, and answer some audience questions.
Two Chicks Walking Tours If you love New Orleans, you’ve probably wandered through the Garden District. It is beautiful, but it really comes to life when you have a guide who can tell you about the history and about the people who live there.
On a Two Chicks Walking tour you learn about the architecture, the residents and more. You also get to tour Lafayette Cemetery, just across the street from Commander’s Palace.
Two Chicks keeps their tour groups small and offers a more intimate experience than most. You’ll have time to ask your questions and really walk away getting an insider’s perspective of the Garden District.
Two Chicks also offers tours of St. Louis Cemetery #1 and the Ladies of the Night tour. Whatever you choose, know you will be in great hands and will have a wonderful time. Use code BEYOND and save 15%. twochickswalkingtours.com

Today’s show is the answer to a question I got from my dental hygienist recently. She asked, "what one thing would you recommend people do in New Orleans right now, beyond Bourbon Street?"
On today's show, I answer her question and tell you why and how I would do it.
